Resume Tossing a New Sport

Good grief. It was a small project. A no brainer. At least I thought it was. I wanted to hire a college student to verify the 1000+ links on my website, the Career Company and add a brief description to each link. The major university where the job was posted will remain nameless. However, after interviewing 14 applicants within the first 24 hours, my hiring decision was a no brainer.

I offered the job to a student who had actually gone to my website, looked at the links and had some fairly lucid, cogent questions around the nature of the work, my business and her responsibilities. She even offered in some of her own creative ideas. 

What about the 13 others? Well they were playing resume toss. They read the job posting. It looked like something they could do easily. After all doesn't everyone know how to surf the Internet and go to different websites?

And the pay was great. I pay well for someone who can work remotely and autonomously as most wage slaves aren't used to being measured by output but by input. None of the other applicants had been to my website. Several were not aware they could have clicked on my company URL in the on ine job posting. Others couldn't extrapolate the name of my company and website from my email address, patti@careercompany.com . When I told the other 13 that I could pay them through Paypal, they uniformly replied, what's that?.  That doesn't bode well as an indicator of one's ability to wander around the Internet with familiarity.

So they were playing resume toss. Looks good so let's just toss our resume at the job. And they all missed by a mile. Since these were young adults, I considered it my civic duty to write in a suggestion about coaching students on job search techniques when I expired the job posting on the university's website.  Maybe they will toss that one around.
